The Threat
Why are we fighting for Lawford Tye Field?
Because we strongly believe that enough is enough. In recent years, our community has seen more than 1,000 new homes built in Lawford Green, Manningtree Park and Summers Park, with more new homes built, or planned, for River Reach and Admiral’s Park in Mistley. Large developments are also in planning for four electricity sub stations with increased traffic, more construction vehicles and little or no improvements to roads or infrastructure. Losing this valuable green space, enjoyed by families, ramblers and dog walkers as a peaceful oasis is a step too far.
Lawford Tye Field is a vital part of Lawford’s rural character. A housing development of almost 100 new homes would be totally out of character and would destroy this accessible green space forever. Yet more development in Lawford poses a direct risk to the wildlife which thrives on Tye Field and to the protected bird species which thrive in the nearby River Stour estuary. And we are fighting to protect our heritage. Lawford Tye Henge is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of similar age and significance as Stonehenge in Wiltshire. Any development of this kind so close to the henge would have a major impact on this neolithic treasure, artifacts from which are housed in Colchester Museum.
The Threat
Welbeck Land has submitted a planning application for development of about 95 dwellings on the green space currently enjoyed by hundreds of people each and every day. This number of homes on such a relatively small site would destroy the rural character of the area.
While Tendring District Council is still finalising its Local Plan, there is a very real risk that this proposal could pass under the radar. We strongly object to this speculative and heavy-handed development and would urge everyone in Lawford to join our campaign.
